ARIZONA SKI REPORT

March 31 2025

Arizona's ski resorts are gearing up for moderate snowfall over the next five days, with the heaviest accumulations forecasted near Chalender and White Horse Lake, both expecting up to 8 inches. These snowfall figures are important for the Flagstaff area, home to Arizona Snowbowl, which is located just north of Fort Valley and Snowslide Canyon—zones forecasting 6 to 7 inches of snow with current snowpack depths up to 24 inches. Though 24-hour snowfall totals remain at or near zero across most regions, Mormon Mountain Summit currently reports a snowpack of 7 inches, with surrounding areas like Baker Butte and Fort Valley beginning to build base levels that may improve conditions soon.

Mount Baldy, the location of Sunrise Park Resort near Greer, is expecting 5 inches of snow through the week with low current snowpack (1 inch), signaling limited near-term improvement for skiing. Nutrioso and Promontory areas, also in eastern Arizona, show minimal snowfall both recent and forecasted. Meanwhile, Mormon Mountain and its summit near Mormon Lake are showing steady snowpack (up to 13 inches) and consistent forecast totals, possibly benefiting Nordic or backcountry skiing. In summary, the highest snowfall potential this week is clustered near Flagstaff and the western Mogollon Rim, particularly around Chalender, White Horse Lake, and Fort Valley—making Arizona Snowbowl the top resort to watch for fresh powder in the coming days.

Arizona may not be the first state that comes to mind when you think of skiing, but it actually has several great options for hitting the slopes.

One of the most popular resorts in Arizona is Sunrise Park Resort, located in the White Mountains. With an average snowfall of around 200 inches per season and a peak elevation of 11,000 feet, this resort offers a variety of terrain for skiers and snowboarders of all levels. The best month to visit Sunrise Park is typically February or March.

Another great option is Arizona Snowbowl, located just outside of Flagstaff. This resort boasts an impressive 260 inches of average annual snowfall and a top elevation of 11,500 feet. Snowbowl is known for its challenging terrain, with plenty of steep runs for advanced skiers and snowboarders. The best time to visit Snowbowl is typically from December through February.

In terms of ski history, Arizona has an interesting connection to the sport. The first organized ski race in the United States actually took place in Arizona in 1915, on the slopes of Mt. Lemmon near Tucson. The state also used to be home to a ski resort called Mount Elden, which operated from the 1940s through the 1970s before closing due to financial troubles.
